What is Vedic Meditation?

nervous system vedic meditation Oct 21, 2026

People often ask me what kind of meditation I teach.

When I say Vedic Meditation, I usually get a curious look. So here it is, simply.

A practice that asks nothing of you

Vedic Meditation is an effortless, mantra-based technique. It comes from the Vedic tradition of ancient India, and it has been passed from teacher to student for thousands of years.

You sit comfortably. You close your eyes. You use your mantra, and your mind begins to settle on its own.

That's it.

No clearing your mind.
No controlling your breath.
No sitting cross-legged on the floor.
No trying.

Why effortless matters

Most of us have been taught that more effort gets better results. Work harder. Push through. Try again.

Vedic Meditation doesn't work like that. The harder you try to be calm, the further away calm feels.

Vedic Meditation works with the nature of your mind, not against it. Given the right conditions, your mind settles by itself. And as your mind settles, your body follows, into a deep state of rest.

That rest is where the work happens.

It gives your body the chance to let go of stress it has been quietly carrying, sometimes for years. I like to think of it as brushing your nervous system each day.

What a practice looks like

You practise for 20 minutes, twice a day. Once in the morning, and once in the afternoon or early evening.

On the couch. On the train. At your desk. Anywhere you can sit and close your eyes. If you can sit you can meditate.I like to think that as long as I get myself to a chair twice a day for 20 minutes, I'm a successful meditator.

You don't need an app, a quiet room or perfect conditions. Once you've learned, it's yours. For life.

How you learn it

Vedic Meditation is taught in person, by a trained teacher. Over four days, 60 to 90 minutes each day, you're given your own mantra and shown how to use it properly.

We go slowly. You ask questions. You practise with support until it feels natural, and until it feels like yours.

There's a reason it's taught this way, and not through an app. You also have support and access to weekly group meditations and unlimited checking of your mantra by Vedic Meditation teachers across the globe.

Coming home

Before learning Vedic Meditation, I felt like I was constantly searching for something. Trying to figure out who I was, who I was supposed to be, and why the hell I always felt like I was falling behind.

I had this underlying feeling that everyone else had somehow figured life out, while I was still trying to piece it all together. I could be doing all the right things, ticking the boxes, achieving the goals, and still feel lost, anxious and like I was somehow missing something.

I spent a lot of time in my head, trying to work things out. Looking for answers, searching for the next thing that might finally make me feel settled, and wondering why I couldn't just relax into the life I was building.

Learning Vedic Meditation changed my relationship with all of that.

Not because it suddenly gave me all the answers, or because I stopped having difficult days, but because I found a way to give my mind and body something they had been asking for all along: deep rest.

Vedic Meditation is the simplest tool I know for giving the nervous system what it's been asking for. It's not another thing to achieve, another habit to perfect, or another way to try to fix yourself. It's an opportunity to stop doing, stop figuring everything out, and allow the body to settle.

And sometimes, that's where the real shifts begin. Not in trying harder to become the person you think you're supposed to be, but in creating enough space to feel a little more at home in who you already are.

Like coming home.
